Every HMC Head is encouraged to undergo a 360-degree appraisal every third year of their Headship. If you select Synergia to do this, the starting point Clare will focus on is: ‘What do you want to achieve from this review process?’
Synergia Coaching Ltd were asked in 2018 by HMC to develop the competencies against which HMC Heads are appraised. Alongside writing the competencies, Synergia MD Clare is also involved in training new Appraisers for HMC, providing a full-circle solution.
Clare uses her extensive knowledge of coaching and working with CEO’s and Business Owners within industry to inform her approach with Heads of schools that are increasingly becoming large businesses.
We have broken down this process in ten steps:
Step 1. Research undertaken by Head/Chair of Governors to establish that Clare is the appropriate person to conduct their appraisal.
Step 2. Following initial meeting, Clare will share with the Head and appropriate Chair of Governors, the competencies for the appraisal. Once these are agreed, the dates for the appraisal process are agreed.
Step 3. Having agreed the schedule of events, school will share the email address of the ‘Raters’.
Head agrees who the ‘Raters’ will be across the school community:
Step 4. Appraisers survey is launched with all selected ‘Raters’. They are given two weeks to complete the survey.
Step 5. Once survey data has been gathered, Clare will spend two/three days on site at school, meeting with a number of representatives from the various Rater groups. Some of these are 1-2-1s and others can be focus groups. For example, members of the Governing body, Senior Leadership Team and parents are 1-2-1s, and whole school staff and pupils are focus groups. The aim of this stage of the process is to triangulate the information/data gathered within the survey report.
Step 6. Clare will take a month to compile all the data from the survey and in-person meetings to develop a complete, detailed appraisal report.
Step 7. Clare will meet with the Head for 2/3 hours to discuss the feedback report in detail. During this time, she will begin to focus on objectives of the appraisal process and how to feed back. Then to focus on what this feedback represents and how does it shape/influence.
Step 8. Clare will then write a summary report for the Head and Chair of Governors which also clarifies agreed development objectives and acknowledges key strengths and achievements of the Head.
This document is agreed with the Head prior to being shared with the Chair of Governors.
Step 9. Clare meets with the Chair of Governors and Head to review survey document and discuss achievements of the Head and their future development.
Step 10. Clare then details the final summary, including the actions and discussions, to the Chair of Governors and Head.
The Synergia team will then provide the opportunity for evaluation of the process.
The Synergia team conduct appraisals across the whole Senior Leadership Teams and have the competency frameworks for a broad range of Senior Team roles – from COO (Director of Opps and Finance) and Deputy Head Roles (academic, pastoral, co-curricular) Directors of Marketing, HR and Assistant Head roles.
